The city of Atlanta is quickly becoming a hot bed for burgeoning artists in the urban and hip-hop scenes. In the past, the South in general, including Atlanta, did not get the kind of musical exposure like California, New York or Chicago. While most of the topics in Southern rap are about success, money and Mercedes parts, some artists are branching out and tackling tough topics in clever ways. Today some of the most commercially and critically successful musical artists are coming straight out of Atlanta, Georgia. Here is a list of three of the top Atlanta hip-hop artists.
T.I.
In the last 5 years, T.I.’s star has risen faster than many other artists due in large part to his smart business moves and his consistent product. T.I. is an artist that stays loyal to his Georgia roots but also isn’t afraid to make forays into commercial music territory. His most recent album before his incarceration on a gun charge, “Paper Trail”, was his most successful and commercial to date, certified double platinum in the United States, a rare feat in this heavy downloading day and age.
Ludacris
Almost a decade into his career as a rap artist, Ludacris has had amazing success both in the hip-hop and acting world. Some smart career choices (or a good PR man) has gotten Ludacris roles in critically acclaimed movies such as “Crash” and “Hustle & Flow.” Ludacris’ rapping style is a perfect example of the sometimes slow, ATL flow with Ludacris’ amusing and clever wordplay mixed in. It is hard to imagine Ludacris being any more successful than he already is. He is an example to all the young kids in Atlanta.
Gucci Mane
You know you’ve reached superstar status when Mariah Carey’s people are calling to get you on the remix to one of her songs. That’s the moment that Gucci Mane’s name really started to ring out in the mainstream. The 29 year old born Radric Davis has been grinding in the Atlanta music scene with mixtapes and guest appearances for awhile until his recent big break through. His newest record was released recently in 2009 and is already getting play on BET and MTV. A rising artist from Atlanta, Gucci Mane is one to watch.
